Philosophy of Education

I believe college students should have a strong liberal arts education to help them explore and
fully develop their intellectual, spiritual, and creative talents. As a teacher, I strive to help students
develop their ability to approach and solve problems creatively, to communicate their ideas
clearly, and to be innovative. As an art teacher, I try to draw out students' creativity by leading
and encouraging them to search within themselves for artistic talent. I teach them the necessary
art skills and help them create works that are uniquely theirs and not merely imitations or
reproductions. I believe that when students are given the opportunity for self-expression in art,
they will be more likely to take innovative approaches to problem-solving.

Teaching Methodology

In my courses, I emphasize the conception, creation, and presentation of art. One of my primary
objectives is to provide students with a strong working knowledge of the possibilities and
limitations of particular materials. This fundamental knowledge gives them the confidence to begin
to manipulate the material creatively and to communicate a concept.  Once I have introduced the
basic functionality of a particular material, I discuss the various techniques that can be used to
develop and support a concept. As students begin to work with the material, I encourage them
to begin giving tangible form to their concept/idea in an innovative way, as they see it in their
mind's eye. I stress both the aesthetic and intellectual values in making art: the bridging of the gap
between concept/idea and form. I encourage and help students to work toward bridging this gap
by giving them a variety of assignments.

At the end of my courses, I expect my students to have developed the ability to skillfully use the
material and tools to both conceive and create artwork--artwork that engages the imagination
and the intellect.
